Next Gen Fundraiser for Unlock Literacy for Kids
Start a FundraiserHelp us bring the gift of literacy to 1,600 kids
For many children, education goes beyond getting a good job or earning an income—it’s a matter of life and death. And a first step on the path to success in school, and life, is the ability to read.
A child born to an illiterate mother is less likely to survive into adulthood. Without an education, children are especially vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, such as being trafficked, forced to marry young, or made to work in hazardous conditions. As many as 100 million young people around the world are still illiterate, but you can help change that!
Unlock Literacy for Kids is a project inspired by best-selling author Debbie Macomber to rally and unite readers of her books and others passionate about education and reading to unlock literacy for kids in Rwanda and the U.S.. For a single $60 gift, you can help an American child and a Rwandan child learn to read.
Our Next Gen group has committed to raise $48,000 to bring the gift of literacy to 40 classrooms in Rwanda and 40 in the U.S. - a total of 1,600 kids.
In the U.S., your gift will help equip kids with the gift of literacy by:
- Providing access to a digital application that includes a virtual library of 400+ books (provided through World Vision partner, Worldreader).
- Encouraging interaction between children and caregivers through the app which includes literacy activities, and age-appropriate, culturally relevant books in multiple languages.
Along with U.S. kids, your investment will reach children in Rwanda by:
- Equipping teachers, providing training and resourcing to support government-approved reading programs.
- Establishing reading camps, making reading fun and engaging outside of a school environment. These reading clubs also loan books for children—sometimes the first book a child has been able to take home!
- Empowering parents, equipping families to cultivate successful reading with their children.
