Lightsource building the future of Sarlahi with World Vision

Children living in Sarlahi face many challenges.

Situated in one of the two poorest provinces of Nepal, 75% of households live on less than $100 per month. Along with poverty some of the other pressing issues facing the community in Sarlahi are malnourishment, lack of education and high rates of child labour; one in three children aged 5-17 years in Nepal are working.

Nepal has the third highest rate of child marriage in Asia, after Bangladesh and India. Children as young as 11 are entering marriages. Two in every five girls in Nepal marry before age 18 and 7.9% are married by age 15.

Families are often broken up as people are forced to migrate to India for extended periods of time in search of work.

The Lightsource Foundation is partnering with World Vision across Sarlahi, helping to improve health, access to clean water, education, and better income opportunities, as well as preventing child marriage, to ensure safety for children and help families to stay in their community and flourish together.

The project focuses on equipping local communities to become self-sufficient, so when World Vision's involvement in the community comes to an end, we are confident families will be able to provide for themselves for generations to come.
