On Saturday, August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near their capital, Port-au-Prince. It collapsed buildings and homes, and destroyed access roads. Survivors have fled their homes in fear they may collapse. Recent reports show nearly 1,300 casualties and thousands injured.
Now, a tropical storm system is approaching Haiti — a threat of further damage. This poses a severe humanitarian crisis for a country reeling due to COVID-19, political unrest, and more.

World Vision’s immediate relief actions, included a shipment of food kits and hygiene goods from WV Dominican Republic, sourced by prepositioned items in the border. These supplies will support 6,000 people initially. Future response actions will include a hybrid model where World Vision Haiti will implement directly some key activities and others through partners. All foreseen activities are planned in close coordination with the government, donors, peer NGOs, and WVI Global Center to assess needs and activate immediate relief mechanisms.
WV Haiti is targeting 240,000 vulnerable people, out of which 60,000 are children and 180,000 are adults in the following areas:
· WASH: Ensure the availability of clean water and purifiers to prevent infectious diseases such a cholera or Covid-19.
· SHELTER: Provide tents to shelter people who lost their homes and are exposed to the elements.
· FOOD: Provide primary food assistance to families, prioritizing those with children.
· CHILD PROTECTION: World Vision will center its capabilities to ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable children, especially those in orphanages, making sure they are safe and cared for amid the prevailing social unrest. This intervention will rely, specifically, on faith based organizations.
World Vision’s vast experience, proficient staff and strong local partnerships allows us to ensure the access of vulnerable families to humanitarian aid, while ensuring a strong logistical supply to tackle the most pressing needs of families and their children.
Partnership Asks:
Given the structural and institutional limitations, this response foresees an initial 12 months duration. Besides, we are asking for technical support in finance, operational logistics, health, WASH and infrastructure reconstruction efforts, as well as humanitarian leadership support.
