The devastating second wave of Covid-19 in the India has caused an unprecedented health emergency with the continuing surge in the number of COVID-19 cases and related deaths. In just three weeks since March, the alarming increase in the infection rate has put India with the world’s second highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases.

As of June 29, 2021, it’s reported 30.3 million confirmed cases and 397,637 deaths have been reported according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, there has been a rapid surge in infection of children in all age groups due to the terrifying speed of the spread within families. The data is still coming from the field, but close to 20% of the current cases are children, and the number may change drastically in the coming weeks.

Healthcare systems are overwhelmed, and thousands have died due to shortages of hospital beds and oxygen. The rapid infection rate has now spread into the rural areas of India that already suffer from lack of access to healthcare. Throughout India, patients are sharing beds while long lines wait outside hospitals. The new mutant strain of COVID-19 is also infecting children, making it one of the deadliest outbreaks on the most vulnerable population in the country.
