If your church has been a partner with World Vision for some time, you may have noticed that we rarely use the word “starving.” Starvation has a specific meaning, and we can’t minimize it. Most at-risk children don’t die of starvation, they die from the consequences of severe malnutrition.
Tragically, we’re forced to use that word. Right now, tens of thousands of children are at immediate risk of literally starving to death in East Africa. Over 10 million children in East Africa are emaciated, meaning they’re too thin for their height.

… for the millions of people struggling to recover from food crises. Famine is the most lethal level of hunger. East Africa is facing a severe drought that risks compounding ongoing humanitarian crises, including a devastating conflict in Ethiopia that has displaced at least 2 million people. The severe weather conditions have killed an estimated 1.5 million livestock there.
Lord, Psalm 65:9 tells us that “the streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain.” We pray that You will send blessings of grain to our hungry brothers and sisters in East Africa.
… that world food prices will be stable. Much of Africa depends on food imports from Ukraine. Pray for God’s intervention in the conditions that lead to food shortages, including high fuel prices, political turmoil, and natural disasters.
Lord, nothing is beyond Your power or out of Your control. Ease the suffering of the hungry by making food affordable for them.
… for children impacted by acute and chronic malnutrition. Malnutrition leaves children vulnerable to devastating effects such as stunted physical growth, delayed or permanently damaged intellectual development, and a lowered immune system. Without proper nutrition, the heart literally shrinks, and in cases of acute hunger, the liver, kidneys, and intestines begin breaking down. Ask God to intervene and protect hungry children.
Lord, we lack words to express how the effects of hunger on children break our hearts. In Your great mercy, protect their lives and bodies.
Your gift to the East Africa Hunger Crisis will help save precious lives in Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. And because of grant funds, your gift will have 3 times the impact to provide emergency food, clean water, access to life-saving medical care, and more to children and families fighting for their lives.
As of December 31, 2021, World Vision has helped more than 4.5 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda.
Through our East Africa emergency response, we aim to help protect the lives and the livelihoods of 7.1 million people made vulnerable by severe conditions in these countries — including 3.4 million children.
World Vision is also currently serving more than 400,000 children in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda through our sponsorship programs.
Across East Africa, at least 12.8 million children are experiencing high levels of malnutrition. In South Darfur, Sudan, World Vision is providing nutritional care for children diagnosed with malnutrition. As of December 31, 2021, 69,269 children have received nutritional care for acute malnutrition.
