THE WORSENING HUNGER CRISIS

In East Africa families have been suffering from food shortages for years. And the effects of COVID-19 are making their hunger even worse. Swarms of desert locusts destroyed over five million hectares of crop land in this fragile region. With their food source demolished and their livelihoods compromised, millions of families and children continue to endure severe starvation with no end in sight.

The shutdown of work and farming because of COVID-19—on top of drought and pestilence—have created what one global expert called a hunger crisis of “biblical proportions.” This poses great danger for vulnerable kids, who are most at risk of malnutrition and disease. We are asking you and your congregation to answer God’s call to help children and families in need in Kenya and Ethiopia.

You know that at World Vision, we follow Jesus’ example by being an active, visible, tangible expression of God’s love as we work alongside the poor and oppressed. Our faith calls us to serve children in need—of any faith, or none. We also partner with church leaders wherever we are able.

Will your church stand with us during this hunger crisis in East Africa?

Will you help hungry children survive? Your church’s gift today will multiply 5X* in impact to help provide emergency food, clean water, access to medical care, and more—assistance that is even more needed during the global pandemic. That means any amount you give will go five times as far to help save lives.

We are deeply grateful for your giving, because we know that your congregation, too, may be stretched by current circumstances. As a token of our thanks, we’re offering a 5-Day Prayer Guide and Journal on generosity that you can offer your congregants.

You can access a downloadable version here. You are free to make as many copies as you can use.

How is World Vision helping people affected by the East Africa hunger crisis?

In 2020, World Vision helped more than 4.7 million children through its programs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Somalia, and South Sudan.

In East Africa, we’re seeking to protect the lives and the livelihoods of more than 3.2 million people made vulnerable by severe conditions. Our emergency response in Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda seeks to feed millions of people, including 1.2 million children.

World Vision is also currently reaching more than 400,000 children in Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia through our sponsorship program.

For more information, visit our "Africa hunger, famine: Facts, FAQs, and how to help" article on our website.

At World Vision, stewardship is an integral part of everything we do. In rare cases where donations exceed what is needed, or where local conditions prevent program implementation, World Vision will redirect funds to similar activities to help children and families in need.
*The multiplying effect from grants and donated goods may change throughout the year on identical or similar offers due to variations in the start and end dates of donor grants and our programs.
